"13 months of Sukur" on Wednesday, February 1 at the downtown branch of the Calgary Public Library (616 Macleod Trail SE). The filmmaker, Dr. Nic David, will be in attendance for a Q&A session following this CPL-partnered screening.

Symposium: What is black history?
Is it even politically correct to call it that? Explore the concept with a symposium of artists at the downtown branch of the Central Public Library (616 Macleod Trail SE) on Friday, February 10. The panel will include genre-defying author and historian Cheryl Foggo, 1970s German rock band vocalist and visual artist Malcolm Mooney, Sudanese author and musician Paul Atanya, jeweler and percussionist Bassirou Sylla, Diaspora dance doyen Michèle Moss, and Steel drum players Chris Copeland and Brian Quaye. Spectacle de Variété Afrique Francophone
Pop quiz: which continent has the most French speakers? With an estimated 115 million people speaking French, Africa is the correct answer. Surprised? Come to Alliance Française (1221 2 St SW) Friday, February 17 at 7pm for "Spectacle de Variété Afrique Francophone", a variety show destined to dazzle you. Joining us onstage is the crème de la crème of Franco-African talent: Congolese poet and actor Tchitala Kamba, percussionist Bassirou Sylla, balafon player Jean Paul, keyboardist Brian Quaye, and local hip hop goup Musaka 5. The evening will surely be a tour de force and as an added bonus: entrée gratuite!

The title says it all... except the juicy details: bring the family at 2pm on Sunday, February 19 and enjoy a hot beverage while engaging in the most Canadian of pastimes: skating around Olympic Plaza while the DJ spins African music! Creative Youth Showcase
Angelique Kidjo. Shad. Nomfusi. Huge stars, but they were kids once. Who knows what future divas, conscious rappers, and Afro-soul singers are sitting behind desks today in Calgary’s schools. Afrikadey! aims to find these young entertainers, writers, visual artists, and dancers and bring them to Cantos Music Foundation (134 11 Ave SE) February 25 at 2pm for a creative youth showcase co-presented by Immigrant Services of Calgary. Talent scouts be on the lookout: the next K’naan may be right in front of you.
